What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a small titanium post that is placed in the jawbone where you are missing a tooth. The titanium post fuses with the bone and serves as a new “root” for your tooth. Once the implant has fused with the bone, we will place a natural-looking porcelain crown on top of the implant. The crown will match your other teeth and no one will be able to tell that you have an implant.

Signs You Need Dental Implants

There are a few different reasons why someone might need dental implants. The most common reason is due to tooth loss. You may be missing one tooth, several teeth, or even all of your teeth. Other common reasons for dental implants include:

Tooth decay

Injury to the mouth or teeth

Periodontal disease

Types of Dental Implants

At the Oral Surgery Center of Lighthouse Point, we offer three different types of dental implants. The type of implant that is right for you will depend on your individual needs and situation. The three types of dental implants we offer are:

Single tooth implantsAs the name implies, this type of implant is used to replace a single tooth. A single implant is placed in the jawbone, and a porcelain crown is placed on top of the implant.

Multiple tooth implants: Multiple tooth implants, also called an “implant-supported bridge”, are used to replace two or more missing teeth. An implant-supported bridge consists of multiple implants that support a porcelain bridge.

Full arch implantsFull arch implants, also called “all-on-four” implants, are used to replace all of the teeth in the upper or lower jaw. An all-on-four implant consists of four implants that support a full set of dentures.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a small metal post that is placed in the jawbone to act as a replacement for a missing tooth. The post is then topped with a porcelain crown, which looks and functions just like a natural tooth.

  • How is a dental implant placed?

The first step in placing a dental implant is to numb the area around the tooth with local anesthesia. Next, your dentist will make an incision in the gum and place the metal post into the jawbone. Once the post is in place, the gum will be stitched up and allowed to heal. Once the gum has healed, the porcelain crown will be placed on top of the metal post.

  • What can I expect after a dental implant is placed?

After a dental implant is placed, you can expect some swelling and discomfort. Your dentist will prescribe pain medication to help you manage any discomfort. It is also important to avoid chewing or putting pressure on the implant site while it heals. Once the implant has healed, you will be able to eat and function normally.
