Frenectomies can help to improve the function and appearance of your teeth and gums.
This surgical procedure can also help to reduce the risk of gum disease and tooth loss.
Frenectomies can also help to improve your bite by correcting the alignment of your teeth.
Did you know that overbites and protruding teeth aren’t the only dental conditions that can be helped with frenectomy surgery? A frenectomy is a surgical procedure to remove or release a frenum, which is a small fold of tissue that connects the lips, cheeks, or tongue to gums or teeth. A frenectomy can also help with gum recession, tongue-tie, and speech impediments. At the Oral Surgery Center of Lighthouse Point, we are proud to offer frenectomy surgery to help our patients achieve optimal oral health.
Frenectomies are simple, outpatient procedures that can be performed with local anesthesia. The procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes, and patients can return to their normal activities the same day. Frenectomies can be performed on patients of all ages, from infants to adults. For infants and young children, a frenectomy can help with nursing and bottle-feeding. In older children and adults, a frenectomy can help improve speech.
There are two types of frenectomies:
Lip frenectomy: A procedure to remove tissue that is attached to the inside of the upper lip, which can help improve the appearance of a “gummy” smile.
Tongue-tie frenectomy: A procedure to release the tongue from the floor of the mouth, which can help with speech and eating.
There are many benefits of frenectomy surgery, which can include:
Improved appearance. For patients who are self-conscious about their “gummy” smiles, a lip frenectomy can help improve the appearance of the teeth and gums.
Improved speech. Tongue-tie can cause problems with speech, and a frenectomy can help to release the tongue and improve speech clarity.
Improved eating. If you have trouble eating because of tongue-tie, a frenectomy can help improve your ability to eat and swallow.
Improved oral health. Gum recession can lead to tooth loss, and a frenectomy can help to prevent gum recession by releasing the tissue that is attached to the gums.
During a frenectomy, Dr. Jennifer Schaumberg will make a small incision in the gum tissue to expose the frenum. She will then carefully separate the tissue from the gums or teeth and remove it. In some cases, Dr. Schaumberg may need to place stitches to close the incision. The stitches will dissolve on their own and do not need to be removed.
After the procedure, you may experience some swelling and soreness in the treated area. This is normal and will subside within a few days. You can help reduce swelling by applying ice to the area and keeping your head elevated. Dr. Schaumberg will give you specific instructions on how to care for your incision and what to expect during your recovery.
A frenectomy could be the answer to your dental concerns. From improved speech to better oral health, a frenectomy can help you achieve optimal dental health. With the help of Dr. Schaumberg, you can enjoy all the benefits that a frenectomy has to offer. To learn more about frenectomies, contact the Oral Surgery Center of Lighthouse Point today.
