Dental implants are a natural-looking tooth replacement option.
They're a great way to improve your smile and self-confidence.
You can replace one or more teeth with implant solutions.
Did you know that missing just one tooth can cause a domino effect of problems throughout your entire mouth? Not only does it affect your chewing ability and therefore your nutrition, but it also causes the teeth adjacent to the empty space to shift out of position. This not only looks unsightly, but eventually leads to even more dental problems. At the Oral Surgery Center of Lighthouse Point, our experienced oral surgeon can place a dental implant to replace your missing tooth and help restore both the function and appearance of your smile.
A dental implant is a titanium screw that is placed into the jawbone in order to serve as a replacement for the root of a natural tooth. Once the implant has fused with the bone, a porcelain crown is placed on top of it in order to restore the visible portion of the tooth. Dental implants are considered to be the best option for tooth replacement because they are strong and durable, and they also look and feel just like natural teeth.
Most people who are missing one single tooth are good candidates for single tooth implants. The best way to find out if you are a candidate is to schedule a consultation with our oral surgeon. During your consultation, the surgeon will perform a thorough examination of your mouth in order to determine if you have enough bone density to support the implant. If you do not have enough bone, the surgeon may recommend a bone graft in order to build up the necessary density. In addition, candidates must be non-smokers who take care of their natural teeth.
The first step in the dental implant process is to have the implant placed into the jawbone. This is done through a minor surgical procedure that is performed under local anesthesia. Once the implant is in place, the surrounding tissue will need to heal.
This process, called osseointegration, usually takes several months. Once the implant has fused with the bone, the second surgery will be performed in order to attach the abutment, which is a small metal connector piece. Finally, the porcelain crown is placed on top of the abutment.
Most patients report very little pain and discomfort after dental implant surgery. However, it is important to follow the surgeon’s instructions for post-operative care in order to ensure a smooth and successful recovery. This usually involves:
Eating soft foods for a few days
Taking over-the-counter pain medication
Applying ice to the surgical area
